Alcorn State University received a $65,000 contribution from Entergy to support the University’s health physics program and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) outreach initiatives.

The donation includes a $50,000 boost to the health physics program to advance learning opportunities for future nuclear power plant workers and $15,000 in grants dedicated to STEM camps. Representatives from Entergy’s Grand Gulf Nuclear Station presented the donation during Alcorn’s pregame homecoming show on Nov. 7.

Justin Rice, senior radiation protection and chemistry manager at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and an Alcorn alumnus, highlighted the personal significance of the investment.

“As a graduate of this program, it’s great to see that it is still being utilized and invested in,” said Rice. “This partnership exemplifies how industry and education can work together to develop exceptional talent and drive long-term growth.”

Dr. Tracy M. Cook, president of Alcorn State University, noted that the continued support is vital for the University’s academic mission.

“This partnership with Entergy is a vital investment in the future of our students and our community,” said Cook. “By supporting our academic programs, Entergy is ensuring that our graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to become leaders in the energy industry. We are proud to continue a collaboration that prepares the next generation of innovators and professionals to make a difference in a global sector.”

The collaboration is a model for workforce development. In 2007, Entergy Nuclear collaborated with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Alcorn to develop the only radiation-related program in the state of Mississippi.

Professional organizations, such as the Health Physics Society, have recognized the Alcorn-Entergy alliance as a national model because of its success in sustaining careers in the nuclear workforce.

Dr. Marcus Ward, senior vice president for institutional advancement and executive director of the ASU Foundation Inc., emphasized the immediate impact on student training.

“Entergy’s recent investment in Alcorn State University’s Health Physics program underscores the power and impact of our longstanding partnership and shared commitment to advancing STEM excellence,” said Ward. “This gift will significantly enhance student learning and hands-on training, expand scholarship opportunities, bring Entergy professionals to the classroom and strengthen Alcorn’s role in developing the next generation of highly skilled professionals for the renewable energy workforce. We are grateful for Entergy’s continued confidence in our mission and our students.”

The effort is designed to help local students enroll in nuclear programs, allowing Mississippi residents to train for local jobs at Grand Gulf and other Entergy Nuclear plants. Today, multiple Alcorn graduates have successfully secured careers in Grand Gulf’s radiation protection and health physics programs.
