A’mari Harris, a senior criminal justice major of Monroe, La., graduated early from Alcorn State University on Thursday, Dec. 11, balancing motherhood, employment and service in the Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite marching band.

Harris completed her degree in just three years, maintaining a 3.5 grade point average. While pursuing her degree, she worked as a certified paralegal at Banks-Miley Law Firm in Monroe and performed as an alto saxophone player in the university’s marching band.

“One of the accomplishments that I am most proud of is becoming certified in the legal field,” said Harris. “Earning that certification showed me how far I’ve come and reassured me that I’m on the right path.”

Throughout her collegiate experience, Harris leaned on her faith and a support system of professors, mentors and peers. She credits these influences with helping her stay focused during challenging times.

“I’ve learned that even when significant things are happening in your life, you never have to stop chasing your dreams,” she said. “I’m leaving Alcorn stronger, more confident and ready to inspire others to push through their challenges as well.”

Harris’ motivation centers on uplifting others, particularly individuals who feel unheard or underestimated. Now that she has graduated, she plans to pursue a master’s degree and attend law school to earn a Juris Doctor. Her long-term goal is to become a civil rights attorney advocating for justice and community advancement.

“I hope to show others, especially young people and parents, that having obstacles or major responsibilities doesn’t mean you have to stop chasing your dreams,” said Harris. “As a future civil rights attorney, I want to make a difference by advocating for fairness, uplifting communities and reminding others that their situation does not define their potential.”
