The Alcorn State University Student Government Association (SGA) inaugurated its new president, Avantavis T. Carter, a senior elementary education major from Hazlehurst, Miss., along with the Resilient 68th Administration on Monday, Sept. 8, 2025.
The SGA is the governing body that represents student interests on campus and beyond, addressing university, county, and state concerns. Its purpose is to foster school pride, loyalty, and a spirit of fellowship among the student body. SGA members also advocate for students on various university committees, task forces, and selection committees.
In addition to these responsibilities, the SGA oversees the planning of extracurricular activities, including Braves Fest and homecoming events, and coordinates its annual election process. The student government works to meet the needs of the student body, but this can only be achieved when students actively voice their views.
“I am honored and excited to serve as SGA president for this year,” Carter said. “I’m very thankful for the continuous support the student body has shown me throughout this journey.”
Following an installation and investiture ceremony led by Judge Tomika Irving of the 23rd Circuit Court District of Mississippi, Carter, a former SGA business manager, Campus Activities Board liaison, and Mister Freshman, delivered his inaugural speech.
The ceremony also included a leadership charge from Rep. Gregory Holloway and the passing of the gavel from 67th SGA President Kristian Bryant.
“I believe that Carter will take the student body to the next level,” Bryant said. “He is a true leader, and his previous experience has shaped him into the bold leader that I know he will be.”
