Not many freshmen from Horn Lake, Miss., have Bangkok on their itinerary. Lorenzo Jackson does.

Jackson, an animal science major with a concentration in pre-veterinary science, is scheduled to study abroad in Bangkok, Thailand, during the 2027 winter trimester through a partnership between Alcorn State University and Generation Study Abroad by the Institute of International Education.

He selected Thailand as his destination because of its emphasis on animal science, which will allow him to take courses and work in labs tied to his major.

“Try to reach out and explore the world,” said Jackson. “I’m from Mississippi and initially wanted to stay because I was comfortable. But I wanted to grow my mindset and travel.”

Jackson advises students interested in studying abroad to begin planning at least a year in advance to allow time for document processing, obtaining a passport and applying for scholarships.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” said Jackson. “Save your money and plan even with scholarships, as the saved money will be extra cushion for other things you may want to explore.”

After graduation, Jackson plans to enter emergency veterinary care services and eventually own a ranch. He also plans to sell meats within his family’s community in Charleston, Miss.

Jackson’s interest in animals began with a childhood fascination with dinosaurs. He is a member of the Alcorn State University Animal Science Club, where he gains hands-on experience working with farm animals.
