Welcome to the Department of Chemistry and Physics where we strive to prepare our graduates to be well-rounded, future leaders in the global marketplace. The past five years has been a very exciting time for us as we have experienced an almost 90% increase in chemistry majors, almost one million dollars in grant funding, a rigorous and caring learning environment, diverse and talented faculty, engaging opportunities for students, and an approximately 70% placement rate of graduates in graduate and professional schools.
The department is actively seeking accreditation of its chemistry program by The American Chemical Society (ACS). Through this process, the department continues to make enhancements through self-assessment; benefits to our students include high impact teaching practices, hands-on experiences with state-of-the-art instrumentation, and access to tutoring, research, and mentoring opportunities.
Student organizations enhance academic experiences. The department is especially proud of the Alpha Chi Sigma Chemistry Fraternity, Delta Beta Chapter; this is the first chapter at an HBCU and the only chapter in the state of Mississippi. Membership in this organization provides students with professional development, opportunities for community service, and a means to make lifelong friends.
Great things are happening in our department and I encourage you to explore our website, contact us, or visit with us.
