The Federal TEACH Grant program provides grant money to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.

Eligible students may receive up to $4,000 per academic year in TEACH Grant funds, up to a maximum of $16,000 for undergraduate and $8,000 for graduate study.

Students who fail to complete the four years of teaching service within eight years after completing coursework, will have the TEACH grant funds converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford loan.

Student Eligibility to Qualify for the Grant

In order to be eligible for a TEACH Grant students must:

  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Financial need is not required.
  • Be enrolled in an eligible program.
  • As a freshman, you must establish a 3.25 cumulative GPA, continuing students must maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA to continue eligibility. Your GPA will be monitored on a semester basis.
  • Complete a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve with the U.S. Department of Education for each year of participation. The Agreement can be signed at https://studentaid.gov/app/launchTeach.action.
  • Complete TEACH Grant Entrance interview for each year of participation.
  • Serve as a full-time teacher for a total of at least four academic years within eight calendar years after you completed or withdrew from the academic program for which you received the TEACH Grant.
  • Perform the teaching service at a low-income school in a high-need filed as outlined at https://studentaid.gov/app/launchTeach.action.

Understand that if you receive a TEACH Grant but do not complete the required teaching service, you will be required to repay the grants as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement.

Once a TEACH Grant is converted to a loan, it cannot be converted back to a grant.
