Alcorn hosts a celebratory luncheon for the Natchez Farmers Market

Alcorn State University recently hosted a holiday luncheon for the Natchez Farmers Market recognizing the local and surrounding farmers, vendors, and consumers. The event was spearheaded by Ms. Helen Brooks, Farmers Market coordinator at Alcorn. In her speech she praised the city and county officials and Alcorn State University administration for their support in this worthwhile endeavor.

Attendees from around the county and neighboring communities joined in to celebrate this milestone. Notable attendees were Mr. Jake Middleton, mayor of Natchez, Mississippi; Mr. Darryl Grennell, Adams County Board of Supervisors and ASU faculty; Dr. Ruth Nichols, senior director of Community Outreach and Partnership Development at ASU, and approximately 50 other guests.

A presentation of the accomplishments throughout the year was outlined for the audience, highlighting events, workshops, and conferences held in the Natchez and surrounding areas.

Ms. Beneta D. Burt, executive director for the Mississippi Roadmap to Health Equity Incorporated, which provides knowledge, tools and technical support to individuals and communities in order to form partnership, served as guest speaker. “Working together people can achieve tremendous success,” said Ms. Burt. “First Lady Michelle Obama visited our office to discuss the state of Mississippi being one of the top states in obesity. She spoke on the importance of healthy eating and proper exercise.”

Closing remarks were given by Dr. Barry L. Bequette, dean and director of land-grant programs for the School of Agriculture Research Extension and Service (AREAS), and Dr. Dalton McAfee, ASU Extension administrator, who highly praised Ms. Brooks and her staff for successfully operating the market for 12 years.

“I want the market to continue to move toward greater creativity, innovation and excellence,” expressed Dr. McAfee. “Especially as the City of Natchez explores relocating Natchez Farmers Market to a bigger and better location in the near future.”
