Jamel Lee’s journey to graduate from Alcorn State University exemplifies faith, resilience, and understanding of one’s purpose.

Lee will earn a master’s degree in workforce education leadership at the University’s Spring 2025 Commencement, closing a chapter that he believes will be legacy-defining.

“This accomplishment is deeply personal and generational for me,” said Lee. “As a father of four daughters, earning a master’s degree is more than a personal milestone: it’s an example for them. I want them to see that they can achieve their dreams with hard work, determination, and faith. I’ve set a bar, not as a limit, but as a foundation that I hope they will rise above as they pursue their educational goals. This degree is a legacy I’m building for them and for generations to come.”

Earning a banner of excellence that is an Alcorn degree came with challenges. Although Lee was excited about furthering his education, he feared being denied entry into the program due to his undergraduate cumulative GPA from his alma mater, Rust College. Firm in his beliefs, Lee overcame fear with faith and proceeded with his mission.

“Faith in God was instilled in me long ago. When I applied to the program, my undergraduate GPA was lower than I would’ve liked, and I wasn’t sure if I’d be accepted. I prayed and told God that if He made a way for me to get in, I would take full advantage of the opportunity. From that moment, I leaned on my faith in Him and my belief in myself. I committed to doing the hard work, and God opened the door for me and allowed me to open doors for others.”

Lee’s faith powered his resilience, giving him the will to maneuver around the obstacles that his path placed ahead of him.

“Resilience was at the core of this journey. There were moments when the weight of school, work, and family responsibilities felt overwhelming. Balancing my academic goals and being present for my family required late nights, early mornings, and constant sacrifices. My daughters and the students I’ve mentored were watching, so I wanted to show them what perseverance looks like. Being resilient meant pushing through when it would’ve been easier to quit, which is the mindset that’s brought me to this shining moment.”

The pressures of graduate school changed Lee significantly, making him better in multiple areas of his life.

“This journey has been transformative. It’s pushed me to grow in faith, discipline, and purpose. From the moment I was accepted into the program, I committed to making the most of the opportunity for my family, my community, and the next generation. Earning my master’s degree was about stepping into the calling God has placed on my life.”

That calling is serving others and creating avenues for them to become successful.

“I’ve always felt serving others is a way of showing gratitude to God. I’m thankful for those who have extended help to me throughout my life, and I believe in paying it forward. I love seeing people do well, and knowing that I’ve contributed to someone’s growth or success is heartwarming.”

Lee’s desire to help others was realized early in his career.

“I worked in an outreach role at the child support office in Memphis, Tennessee, after my undergrad years. I helped mothers and fathers gain access to education, employment, and resources that empowered them to become self-sufficient. That position opened my eyes to the real impact of service and showed me that I wanted to dedicate my life and career to helping others grow, thrive, and reach their full potential.”

Helping underserved people find their way in society led to a career of Lee being a light to others, which eventually led him to accept a role at his alma mater [Rust College].

“I always knew I wanted to return to Rust College in some capacity. For two years, I served as an academic counselor for Upward Bound, helping to inspire high school students in the community to pursue college. I made it my mission to encourage them academically and represent the high standard that Rust College sets. I poured everything I had into those students because I wanted them to see what’s possible while giving back to the institution that shaped me. My time at Rust was truly the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Lee’s educational and professional experience also led him to co-found Graduate Ready, a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved and underrepresented youth prepare for life after high school.

“Our mission is to provide the tools, mentorship, and support that young people need to succeed in college, careers, and beyond. My academic journey helped me realize that success is about reaching back and lifting others as you climb. This Alcorn degree is a symbol of that commitment and the beginning of what I hope to accomplish in serving others.”

At Alcorn, Lee experienced the support and service he extended to others. He applauds the University for helping him reach new levels of strength.

“Although my program was fully virtual, I could feel the spirit of Alcorn every step of the way. The sense of community, pride, and support was undeniable. My professors were always available, helpful, and incredibly encouraging. They pushed me to do my best and held me accountable when I fell short, and I truly admired that. Their dedication reminded me that I wasn’t just earning a degree, I was becoming a stronger version of myself.”

Lee is proud to cross the Brave finish line.

“Earning a master’s degree from Alcorn fills me with immense pride. This is one of the most significant accomplishments of my life. I come from a family with strong Alcorn ties – my sister, niece, cousins, and close family friends are proud alumni who speak highly of their time here. Joining them is an honor. It means so much to carry on that legacy and represent a University that has given so much to so many.”
