Kayleigh Lucas, a biology major and graduating senior at Alcorn State University, hailing from Biloxi, Mississippi, is set to receive her diploma at the Spring 2025 Commencement ceremony on May 10 in the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex. In addition to celebrating this milestone, Lucas is also looking forward to pursuing her passion for pharmacy after being accepted into pharmacy school. As a talented trombone player, she has also contributed to the university’s renowned Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite Marching Band.
Lucas’s path toward pharmacy began with her mother’s career as a nurse. While her mother’s experiences initially exposed her to the healthcare field, Lucas realized early on that nursing wasn’t her specific calling.
“My mom is a nurse, and from what she’s been telling me all her stories, I knew nursing wasn’t for me,” Lucas said.
Her interest in pharmacy took root during her senior year of high school, sparked by her enjoyment of laboratory work. This initial curiosity solidified into a career goal as she progressed through her studies.
“I started looking into pharmacy during my senior year of high school, and it just stuck with me ever since because I love the lab. I love what we do in lab, and that just made me go through it more,” she explained.
Navigating the academic requirements of her pre-pharmacy track, Lucas found crucial support from several individuals at Alcorn State. She specifically credited Dr. Cooper, her Organic Chemistry professor, for helping her succeed in a vital course required for her pharmacy school application.
“Dr. Precious Cooper, my chemistry professor, helped me finally pass. That was the course I needed to apply. She helped me finally pass it,” Lucas said.
Lucas also highlighted the significant impact of Ms. Erika Johnson, director of Student Support Services, describing her as a key advisor and source of support throughout her academic journey. “Her name is Ms. Johnson. She’s over at Student Support Services. Her, too. She helped me a lot,” she added.
As the May 10 commencement approaches, Lucas is making final preparations, including gathering graduation photos, some of which she has already used for her invitations.
With her acceptance into pharmacy school secured, Lucas is looking forward to the next stage of her education and career, building upon the foundation laid during her time at Alcorn State University.
