ABEC holds first black history month celebration
On Thursday, February 9, the Alcorn State University Agribusiness and Economics Club (ABEC) held its first Black History Month Celebration in the Ray Johnson Assembly Center.
“The purpose of the program was to celebrate the significant contributions of African-Americans to our history,” shared president of ABEC junior agricultural economics major Marcus Griffin. “We wanted to show our appreciation to the people that paved the way for us, because if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t live as we do today.”’
Alexander Martin’51 , the 22nd Circuit Court district attorney, was the guest speaker. “I really appreciate the opportunity to come back to Alcorn and speak at this program”, expressed Martin. “It is a family tradition to attend Alcorn – my grandmother, parents and daughter graduated from here. So, it is indeed an honor to have been asked to speak at ABEC’s first black history month celebration.”
In his speech, Martin expressed his excitement about the many advances he’s seeing on the campus and encouraged all students to help honor the legacy of Medgar Wiley Evers ’52 and contribute to the campaign to build a statue of Evers. “In my opinion, Evers is the greatest Alcornite of all time.”
