Division of Student Affairs at Alcorn gives back, volunteers with local “Fat to Fit” event
On July 19-20, the Fayette Community Service Organization (FCSO) hosted its 3rd annual Fat to Fit Summer Community Event. On hand to help were members of Alcorn’s Division of Academic and Student Affairs, donating time and water to the event designed to show area residents the benefits of being active.
Over 40 sponsors, that also included Alcorn’s Department of Agriculture, were made available to 250 community members. “It is a must that we show the communities in which we’re situated that Alcorn cares and supports any endeavor that promotes self-awareness, healthier lifestyles and the advancement of education,” said Student Engagement Director at Alcorn Devina Hogan. “We cannot ask students to become global citizens and to donate their time and talents to uplift their communities if we are not willing to do so ourselves.”
Jefferson County residents participated in basketball tournaments, a 5K marathon and health fair among other activities and received bicycles, cash and other prizes to promote increased physical activity and health education in the county.
“Fat to Fit was an invigorating experience for persons of all age groups,” shared Alcorn’s Dr. Valerie Thompson. “Transforming one’s mindset towards long-term good health and fitness is key and this event did just that, encouraging physical fitness through fun activities.”
