Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion sponsors Men’s Retreat, plans empowerment Initiative
On September 8-9, a group of 15 male Alcorn students joined Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Educational Equity and Inclusion, on a weekend retreat to develop plans for a new community-based program to benefit young men in communities across the state of Mississippi.
Following attendance of the powerful Men of Color Summit at Mississippi State University, where Dr. Greenfield participated as a panelist, the Men Achieving Dreams Through Empowerment (M.A.D.E. Men) prepared workshops that will be implemented in areas with Alcorn alumni chapters to reach high school students who otherwise might not have access to positive male role models.
“It is clear that so many young men in Mississippi, despite their tremendous talent, are struggling to fulfill their potential. Our successful males at Alcorn can serve as inspiration and guides to the youth, and we look forward to being a model program in making a difference,” said Dr. Greenfield.
“The retreat was a life-changing experience which motivated us even more to create this program,” said Kaelon Walker, an MBA student from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and graduate assistant in the Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion who will serve as co-director of this initiative which will formally launch at the beginning of October.
