The latest program in the Diversity & Inclusion Arts and Lecture Series, sponsored by the Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion, featured a dynamic presentation by Queen Quet, the elected Chieftess and Head-of-State for the Gullah/Geechee nation.

Following an inspiring performance by the Alcorn State University Gospel Choir, Queen Quet delivered powerful words about the importance of cultural identity and multicultural understanding, using an engaging style to involve the audience which packed the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. She noted that the crowd represented the largest group she ever addressed at an HBCU institution, celebrating the university’s dedication to diversity.

A Sudy Abroad Information Fair which was hosted by the Office of Global Programs took place concurrently, with over 100 students gaining access to information about these educational opportunities.

“I come from a low-income area of Chicago, Illinois, where you don’t see many motivated people striving for success,” shared Kenisha Smith, a senior, math education major. She said that Queen Quet’s performance made her feel good about herself. “I’ve got a much needed boost that motivated me to work hard during my last year at school, not to give up and graduate.”

Michael Reed, a senior majoring in social work, said that he could relate to the performance and “felt empowered and overwhelmed. I feel that I can achieve anything I put my mind to.”

Dr. Derek Greenfield, director of Educational Equity and Inclusion, stated, “From the incredibly positive response in evaluations and on social media, it’s clear that the event was a tremendous success, and we are excited about our campus community’s commitment to these issues.”

The next installment of the series takes place on Monday, October 14, as nationally known artist Pavel Acevedo brings his unique brand of creativity and cultural insights to the stage for a highlight event during Alcorn’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
