Alcorn Extension to hold health fair in Mound Bayou

Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) will host a health fair 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at Mound Bayou Community Facility Building, 301 Martin Luther King Drive, Mound Bayou, Mississippi.

This health fair is a part of Extension’s signature Power of 3 Health and Wellness program and will encompass each of the program’s three core areas, which include home and community gardening, nutrition and physical fitness. Access to this information will provide an effective means to positively impact the health and quality of life for Mississippi residents.

Joshua Coleman, program field coordinator stated, “ASUEP has a long history in the city of Mound Bayou. As with all of our programs, we want to offer resources from the Power of 3 to the city’s residents to empower them to make the changes needed to adopt a healthier lifestyle.”

The event will provide important information to educate community members. Highlights of the event will feature a food preparation demonstration, provide educational resources on starting and maintaining home and community gardens, and give insight and information on nutrition and physical activity, including interactive sessions to get participants moving.

In addition, the Delta Health Center and the Delta Health Alliance will be on hand to conduct health screenings for all in attendance.

Coleman stated, “This event will serve as a platform to bring awareness to the current health status of the state and give residents the opportunity to learn how they can empower themselves to live healthier. We want the residents of Mississippi to utilize this information to create their own gardens, providing them with access to fresh fruits and vegetables, to prepare delicious and nutritious meals. We are also offering basic techniques for increasing physical activity. All of these are important components of a healthy lifestyle."

This event is free and open to the citizens of Mound Bayou and surrounding areas. All interested persons are invited to attend. The next ASUEP Power of 3 Health & Wellness event is tentatively scheduled for July 12, 2014 in Natchez, Mississippi. It will also include a run/walk.
