Alcorn names Emanuel Barnes Sr. vice president for Student Affairs

Lorman, Miss. (May 30, 2014) – Alcorn State University has selected Emanuel Barnes Sr. to lead the Division of Student Affairs as its newly appointed vice president, pending the approval of the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning.

Barnes began his Alcorn career in 1975 as a residence hall director in the Division of Student Affairs. In 1985, he served as an admission counselor/recruiter and was promoted to associate dean of Students in 1988 and dean of Students in 1989. In 1993, he held the position of director of Admissions and Recruiting and most recently, served as the deputy provost for Student Services.

In his new role, Barnes’ responsibilities will include overseeing the areas of Admissions and Recruiting, Counseling and Testing, Judicial Affairs, Health and Disability Services, Student Engagement, Financial Aid, Residence Life, the Campus Union, the Natchez Student Service Center and Placement Services.

Barnes will report directly to the president and serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. President Alfred Rankins Jr. noted that Barnes brings an “exceptional background and demonstrated leadership” in all aspects of student affairs.

Barnes said, “I am honored to continue to serve Alcorn students. It’s been a pleasure to spend my entire higher education career working with Alcorn students, encouraging them and making a positive difference in their lives. I am looking forward to implementing strategies and initiatives to provide our students with outstanding programs and services.”

Barnes earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in education from Alcorn. He is married to the former Sandra L. Williams and they have five children.
