Alcorn gets ready for homecoming week

A slew of exciting events are on tap for Alcorn State University’s homecoming week.

The festivities will kick off with the homecoming gospel concert at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12 at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex. The concert will feature gospel-recording artists Alexis Spight and DA T.R.U.T.H. A night of spiritual inspiration will be followed by a night of laughter at the Homecoming Comedy Show at 8 p.m. Monday at the same location. Comic Joe Torry, who is know for his roles in the movies “Sprung” and “Poetic Justice,” will handle hosting duties. Wild’N Out cast member Karlous Miller will deliver laughs as featured comedian.

Campus organizations will bring Bourbon Street to Alcorn with its Harvest Fest at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Campus Plaza. If it rains, the event will be moved to the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium.

Student Government Association President Zackeus Johnson will be officially sworn in at the SGA Presidential Inauguration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 in the Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr. Dining Facility – Gold Room. Following the inauguration, DJs will battle it out on the turntables at the Battle of the DJs from 8 – 11 p.m. at the Campus Plaza. Lady Cortni Cooper will be officially crowned at the coronation of Miss Alcorn State University at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.

The lineup for Friday, Oct. 17 will include the Homecoming Bragging Rights Forum from 9 – 10:30 a.m. The Alumni Purple and Gold Golf Tournament starts at 10 a.m. in Bovina at the Clear Creek Golf Course.

The Brave Pride Pep Rally will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 1 p.m. 99 Jams/WJMI out of Jackson, Miss. will be broadcasting the event live from the Campus Green located behind the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility. The night on-campus activities will conclude with the Greek Step Show from 7 – 10 p.m. at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex. The alumni Golden Girls and Drum Majors will be featured performers. Admission will be $5 for students and $10 for the public.

Alumni should not miss the Paint the 'Burg Purple and Gold Music Festival and Back to the Yard Block Party which starts at 3 p.m. in historic downtown Vicksburg.

And it’s Homecoming, [Saturday, Oct. 8], finally. The “Breakfast of Champions” will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom. Admission for the event is $25.00. The homecoming parade will start promptly on the Lorman campus. See the Alcorn State University Braves take the field against Texas Southern University for the Homecoming Game at 2 p.m. at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium.

Later that evening in Vicksburg, the Back to the Yard VI: The Official Alumni Homecoming Celebration will be held at the Vicksburg Convention Center at 9 p.m. The event will be hosted by JB Entertainment Group and features DJ Phil.
