Alcorn alumna opens fast food chain

Vicksburg, Miss. residents now have a restaurant where they can enjoy succulent, gourmet styled burgers.

Alcorn State University alumna Shannon Reed Atlas, along with her husband Marvin Atlas, has opened a fast food franchise called Kooky Burgers located at 3401 Halls Ferry Road Suit 5 in Vicksburg, Miss. behind Walgreens.

The new burger joint offers 100% USDA Angus chuck burgers and a condiment station that includes guacamole, salsa, barbeque sauce, tomatoes, jalapeno peppers and much more. The business will have its grand opening on January 29.

Shannon, who earned her bachelor’s degree in plant and soil science in 2010 and her master’s degree in work force development leadership in 2013, enjoys the idea of being part owner of the new business.

“It feels awesome to be my own boss,” said Shannon, who is a Vicksburg native. “I love cooking and food, so my husband and I are over joyed to have created and own a franchise.”

Even though the new restaurant will have plenty of competition from other eateries, Shannon is confident in the company’s future success.

“What God has for us is for us so I’m not worried about Kooky Burgers holding up against other businesses in our location. God has given my husband and I a vision and our goal is to sale other Kooky franchises nationwide. Expanding will create jobs and provide opportunities for us to do community outreach.”
