Governor Bryant honored Alcorn Braves football team
Lorman, Miss. (February 3, 2015) – Governor Phil Bryant welcomed the Alcorn State University Braves football team to the executive mansion Monday, Feb. 2 in celebration of their Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship and Sheridan Broadcasting Network Sports Black College Football National Championship titles.
“Alcorn State University has achieved the pinnacle of success in winning the 2014 SWAC Championship,” said the 64th Governor Phil Bryant. “Mississippi is extremely proud of the Braves, and we thank them for representing the state of Mississippi with distinction on the national level.”
The 10-3 Braves finished ranked number one in the SBN poll and the Boxtorow coaches and media polls. They enjoyed refreshments, a tour of the mansion and had their photo taken with Governor Bryant.
“Our Braves were disciplined. Couple that with heart and determination, and you’ll understand why we’re champions,” said Athletic Director Derek Horne. “Our student athletes worked hard and brought pride and recognition to Alcorn and the state of Mississippi.”
Several members of the Mississippi legislature joined Governor Bryant as he congratulated the Braves and presented President Alfred Rankins Jr. and Coach Jay Hopson with a proclamation acknowledging the Braves successful season.
President Rankins thanked Governor Bryant on behalf of the entire Alcorn family for his support of the institution.
“On behalf of the Alcorn State University Braves football team and the entire Alcorn family, we present you with this commemorative championship football for display here at the governor’s mansion,” President Rankins said. “We thank you for this recognition and your continuous support of Alcorn.”
