Alcorn alumni to convene for Purple & Gold Day at the Capitol

Alcorn’s alumni and friends will meet at the state capitol to discuss the betterment of the university by funding.

Purple & Gold Day, a day set aside for Alcorn faithful to advocate for full and adequate state funding and support, will take place at the Mississippi State Capitol Building, 400 High Street, Jackson, Miss., Feb. 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Mississippi Legislators will also honor the Braves football team and coaching staff for an exceptional season that resulted in winning the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship game and becoming National Black College Champions.

Robert Simmons, who is the legislative chairman of the Alcorn State University National Alumni Association, looks at the meeting as an opportunity to persuade state officials to assist Alcorn in becoming an even greater institution of higher learning.

“This event is about making good relationships,” said Simmons. “This will be our opportunity to interact with state officials and represent Alcorn and higher education. It is important that the officials are interested in supporting Alcorn.”

Alumni and friends are encouraged to wear purple and gold for the event. Lunch will be provided.
