ASUEP to hold Community Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony in Vicksburg

The Alcorn State University Extension Program (ASUEP) will host its first community garden kickoff Saturday, March 28 at 10:00 A.M. The program will be held at the Vicksburg Community Garden, 5855 Highway 61 South in Vicksburg, Miss. near the airport.

The event provides an opportunity for local residents to gain knowledge on growing their own fruits and vegetables within their communities and homes that would enable them to eat healthier.

The event will include a presentation on the ASUEP Health and Wellness program, which will focus on home and community gardening, nutrition, and physical activity. Children will be entertained with activities and games, including a stationary bike that allows the rider to make smoothies while pedaling. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about garden design as well as the goals for the new community garden project.

“Through working with the City of Vicksburg, our partners at Shape-Up Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Community Garden, we designed an event that will encourage the entire community to learn about gardening,” said Joshua Coleman, program field coordinator for the ASUEP.

All individuals, businesses, and community groups who desire to play a role in the community garden kickoff are invited to participate. For more information on this free public event, contact Mr. Coleman at 601-786-3131 or [email protected] or Ms. Linda Fondren, founder of Shape-Up Vicksburg, at (601) 619-7277 or [email protected].
