Alcorn Walks, Runs and Rides to celebrate 125th anniversary of the signing of the second Morrill Act
On a bright Saturday morning on August 29, the Alcorn State University family and friends, wearing the Alcorn purple, gathered on the University’s Lorman campus for the Walk, Run or Ride Summer Extravaganza.
The program included a 2-mile walking trail, 2.5-mile running course and horse ride, as well as motorcycle trail rides from Lorman to Fayette, Mississippi, music, food, and fellowship.
“The event was held to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the signing of the second Morrill Act, the key piece of legislation that led to the creation of historically black land-grant colleges,” said Dr. Gregory Reed, assistant director for Extension, School of Agriculture, Research, Extension and Applied Sciences, and event chair. “We appreciate everybody who came out to support the University today, and we also would like to thank those who sent their monetary donations and helped us collect over $10,000 that will be used for student scholarships.”
Dr. Wandra Arrington, assistant director of pre-professional and honors programs, who brought her honor students to the celebration, said, “We are here today because the Morrill Act allowed so many of us to receive education and to continue to educate our students.”
Recent graduate Darren Jones believes in supporting his school. He stated, “I just graduated in May and know how important it is to have financial support to graduate. Many of our deserving students will benefit from this initiative.”
Alumnus Andre Young and his wife Ira, both members of the class of 1976 and active supporters of their alma mater, said, “The school needs our support year round, so we gladly came out today. We enjoyed walking, catching up with fellow Alcornites and showing our Alcorn pride.”
Associate Athletics Director of Administration John Lewis encouraged coaches and support staff to participate in this important event. He knows the importance of staying physically fit.
“I enjoyed the activities and I think this event is a great idea. It is all about giving back to the University and our students,” he said.
