Office of Career Services will host Career Exploration Week
Professionalism will be the theme of Alcorn State University’s next series of events.
The Office of Career Services will host the first annual Career Exploration Week Monday, Sept. 28 through Friday, Oct. 2. The events, which will be held in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom and Multipurpose Room, will feature speakers such as UGK rapper Bun B and Rice University’s Dr. Anthony Pinn. The guests will inform the students on how to present themselves in a professional setting.
The week will kick off with the Sigma Chi Iota and Student Government Leadership Discussion (SGA) Panel featuring Bun B and Dr. Pinn Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Graduate Professional Expo will be held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday’s Career Exploration Day (Career Fair) will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Teacher Recruitment Fair will be on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The final event will be an Open House from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Union Multipurpose Room.
Joey Mitchell, director of Career Services, stressed the importance of teaching students how to conduct themselves in a professional manner to increase their chances of finding employment.
“Today’s job market is highly competitive,” said Mitchell. “Education alone does not sell who you are to the employer. In order to be gainfully employed in any occupational field, we must expose our students to what employers expect of them.”
Students who plan to attend the Graduate Professional Expo, Career Exploration Day, and Teacher Recruitment Fair are required to wear formal attire. Students are also required to bring a portfolio that includes their resume.
