Alcorn’s Social Work Club host nursing home sock drive

Alcorn State University social work students have gotten into the giving spirit with their latest charitable event.

The Alcorn State University Social Work Club is hosting a “Sock-It to Diabetes” Nursing Home Sock Drive. Social work students are collecting 300 pairs of clean white socks and diabetic support socks. The socks will be donated to seniors living in nursing homes in Vicksburg, Port Gibson and Natchez.

Assistant professor of social work and club advisor Dr. Shani Collins expressed the importance of helping the community and developing the leadership skills of students.

“Service is a vital part of the social work profession,” said Collins. “The Alcorn Social Work club seeks to cultivate and develop student leaders who recognize the importance of community service and engagement.”

A collection bin is located in Dumas Hall outside of room 206. The sock drive will end on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Donations from other departments are encouraged.
