Jessica Williams awarded scholarship

Alcorn State University graduate student Jessica Williams’ college journey got even better when she earned her recent award.

Williams was awarded a $500 Lucille “Diva” Davis Academic Scholarship Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Leading Ladies Society’s 5th Annual Fall Gala at the Broadmoor Community Center in Natchez, Mississippi. The Leading Ladies Society is a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to raise funds to provide educational scholarships and grant wishes by way of Lisa’s List, a wish granting foundation for chronically or terminally ill women. The organization’s mission is to bring women together regardless of race, religion, socio-economic status, age or sexual orientation so they can grow personally, professionally and spiritually.

Williams, an animal science major, is thrilled to be the recipient of the award.

“I feel very grateful to receive the scholarship,” said Jessica, a Memphis, Tennessee native. “I will use it to fund my education.”

Helen Brooks, marketing coordinator of the Alcorn Extension Program, explains why Jessica was the perfect candidate to receive the award.

“We as an organization feel wonderful in giving Jessica the scholarship because it shows that she has a passion for what she is trying to accomplish,” said Brooks. “This scholarship is to encourage young ladies to pursue degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math.”
