USDA Invests More than $9 Million to Support Small Businesses in 12 States

  • Last week, the Department of Agriculture announced funding through Rural Development's Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant program. REDLG provides zero-interest loans and grants to utilities that lend funds to local businesses for projects to create and retain employment. More than $9 million dollars were invested in small businesses across 12 different states.

USDA to Help 821 Rural Small Businesses Boost Renewable Energy Use, Save on Energy Costs

  • USDA is providing $43.2 million in loan guarantees and $11.6 million in grants through Rural Energy for America Program for projects in every state including the territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. REAP provides grants and loans to agriculture producers and small businesses.

USDA Funds 81 Distance Learning and Telemedicine Projects in 32 States

  • USDA RD announced that it was awarding $23.4 million in grants to support distance learning and 36 telemedicine projects through its Distance Learning and Telemedicine Projects. This program connects rural communities with medical and educational experts in other parts of the country. During the announcement Secretary Vilsack noted that "using technology for educational opportunities and medical care can provide services that are often unavailable in rural areas."

USDA Awards More than $26 million for Affordable Farmworker Housing

  • USDA announced funding to support 439 rental units in California, Florida, Kansas, and Texas through Farm Labor Housing Loan and Grant program. This program helps qualified organizations develop housing for farmworkers, make housing repairs, and provide household furnishings.
