Surviving the storm: Krista Davis is breast cancer free

December 1, 2015 is a day that Alcorn State University alumna Krista Davis will cherish for the rest of her life. On that day, her bout with breast cancer had come to an end. Davis humbly credits her strong belief in spirituality for aiding her in her pursuit of healing.

“I was totally elated,” said Davis. “Actually, I always knew that God would heal me. After that news, I prepared myself to finish the last few reconstruction surgeries and then, I was cancer free.”

Overcoming cancer is an incredible feat that Davis is proud of. From the day she was diagnosed, she made up in her mind that she would fight the illness with all she had. In her mind, breast cancer didn’t stand a chance of defeating her.

“I overcame breast cancer because I never accepted that this was the final verdict on my life. I told myself that cancer would not be my demise. I refused to allow cancer to change my life. So besides my belief in my Savior, the remedy to my cure was to never stop believing; keep pushing, keep smiling and keep living.”

The journey is one that Krista will always remember. Beating breast cancer proves that Krista is a warrior, and that nothing can stop her from fulfilling her purpose.

“It was a chapter of my life that I won’t ever forget. It made me stronger. It was a chapter that I was blessed to live through. Every day, I remind myself of my fight and how I won. So I apply that to every situation in my life. All things are possible.”

As Davis reflects on her journey and approaches a year of being cancer free, she reminisced on recuperating physically and mentally. Although challenging, she was able to weather the storm. Now, she’s focused on moving forward and seeing what the future has in store for her.

“It feels great to be cancer free. As of today, I am physically back to myself. My last reconstruction procedure is in November. Mentally, I strive to seek my purpose in life and fulfill it. I’m sure it is something great because I’ve made it through so much. I’m looking forward to seeing what else my future holds.”

Davis encourages anyone suffering from the disease to remain faithful and strong.

“Don’t give up. Never accept cancer as your destiny. Every day is another day to live and believe that you will survive.”
