Students and alumni to meet and greet at Miss Alcorn’s Brave Alumni and Student Cookout
Students seeking advice on what direction to take after their departure from Alcorn State University will have the opportunity to mingle with alumni at Miss Alcorn State University’s upcoming event.
Whitney Jackson, reigning Miss Alcorn 2016-2017, will host the Brave Alumni and Student Cookout Saturday, April 8 from noon-4 p.m. on the campus green. The purpose of the cookout is to create a fun and caring environment in which students can network and build relationships with alumni.
The festivities will include food, fun and plenty of games such as kickball, volleyball, tug-a-war and much more. The first 100 attendees will receive a free T-shirt. Door prizes will also be given away.
The idea to bring students and alumni together stems from Miss Alcorn’s campaign slogan, “Building Character, Revitalizing Spirit, While Soaring Towards Progression.”
“One of my main focuses while campaigning was to make sure that students and alumni formed a better connection with each other,” said Whitney. “I believe that their interaction will help move the University forward.”
Whitney is confident that students will receive valuable information about their postgraduate endeavors while mingling with alumni. She also hopes that her peers are inspired to one day give back to the University.
“I believe students will gain insight and knowledge about pursuing careers after they leave college. I also hope that the students pay attention to the alumni’s success stories and contributions and become inspired to be donating alumni.”
Breyunna Johnson, a sophomore and biology pre physical therapy major, said that she’s looking forward to the event and sharing ideas with other Alcornites.
“I’m really interested in receiving guidance on how to handle the pressures of being a college graduate and how to deal with what’s to come,” said Breyunna. “I also hope to receive some tips on staying focused and properly handling priorities.”
Casey Mock, a 2013 and 2015 Alcorn graduate, said that the gathering will be a great way for Alcornites of all ages to effectively communicate with each other.
“I think the cookout will present a great opportunity for bridging the gap between our students and alumni of all ages,” said Mock. “This event is a great way to establish lines of communication between the two groups.”
