IHL approves program name change to Food, Nutrition, and Community Health Sciences

The Department of Human Sciences has received approval to change the Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics to a Bachelor of Science degree in Food, Nutrition and Community Health Sciences.

The Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning approved the name change, which will become effective January 2018. The Bachelor of Science degree program, in Food and Nutrition and Community Health Sciences, is now accepting students and will be administered through the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

According to Cinda Catchings, director and instructor of the Didactic Program in Dietetics, a degree in Food, Nutrition and Community Health Sciences will provide an opportunity for growth within the Department of Human Sciences, while increasing opportunities for our students. The undergraduate bachelor’s degree is multidisciplinary and will focus on the role of food, diet, nutrition and related technology in human health.

“Food, Nutritional and Community Health Science professions are among the fastest growing career paths. The degree is fulfilling, rewarding, and stimulating. A Bachelor of Science degree in Food, Nutrition and Community Health Sciences will increase the marketability of the students, providing diverse opportunities in areas such as: health care; community and public health; business; food marketing and development; food systems and industry; restaurants; schools; wellness and fitness as well as communications, media, and technology,” Catchings said. “The degree can also lead to a range of careers in manufacturing, research, and retail as well as associated health, legislation, engineering and agriculture.”
