School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences Hires Beunkka Davis

Alcorn State University’s School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences is pleased to announce its recent hire of Beunkka Davis. Davis joined the communications team as a staff writer under the leadership of Dr. Freda M. Lawrence, director of media and communications for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences.

Within this role, Davis will craft documents highlighting the research, initiatives and advances of the School’s students, faculty and staff, as well as the positive contributions being made in the community.

Davis comes to Alcorn with five years of experience in the communications sphere. Most recently, she worked as communications coordinator for the Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), of Washington, D.C. There, she drafted print, social media and graphic communications for the K-12 Education Division of the association, which emphasized the importance of future careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This background has helped Davis to make an easy transition into her new position.

“As an Alcorn State alumnae and former media intern for the School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, I was attracted by the School’s mission to positively impact the small and limited-resource farmers and ranchers in the region through research-based strategies and scientific innovations. I believe that teaching people how to apply self-sustaining principles to their lives is the foremost method by which we can truly create change in our communities,” says Davis. “I was also impressed by the School’s commitment to producing future scientists, researchers and agricultural professionals. I am passionate about promoting careers in STEM for women, minorities, and for students who hail from limited-resource families and communities.”

After pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Film and Media Studies at Howard University, where Davis is currently working on her thesis documentary about blues music in the Mississippi Delta, she is excited to return to Alcorn’s Campus.

“I’m elated about the opportunity to apply the skills and techniques learned during my graduate education, as well as during my professional experiences, to accentuate the great work being done here,” she says.
