The Department of Social Sciences will host its Constitution and Citizenship Day, on Tuesday, September 17, at 2:00 p.m. in Dumas Hall, Room 107.

This event will highlight the rights and responsibilities of citizens and the vital role we play in democracy.

This year’s guest speaker is The Honorable Thomas “TJ” Mayfield, the newly elected Ward 1 alderman for the City of Vicksburg. Mayfield will share insights on the importance of the Constitution and civic engagement.

Mayfield was elected as Ward 1 alderman on May 30, 2024, and was sworn into office on June 19, 2024.

He holds the distinction of being the youngest executive director of the Mississippi Kidney Foundation. Prior to his current role, Mayfield served as an educator in the Vicksburg-Warren School District, where he founded several impactful initiatives including the Gentlemen of Intelligence, Valor, and Excellence, the Gator Career Closet, and Razor-Sharp Reading.

Mayfield is a graduate of Alcorn State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in social science education and a master’s degree in workforce education leadership. His educational background and diverse experience in public service make him uniquely qualified to discuss the intersection of constitutional rights and civic responsibility.

During his tenure at the Mississippi Kidney Foundation, Mayfield has been appointed to several notable positions. He serves on the State Health Improvement Plan, the Mississippi State Health Improvement Plan for Diabetes and Youth Mentorship Taskforce, and the Mississippi Alliance for Non-Profit and Philanthropy Health Affinity Board. Additionally, he is a member of the Alport Syndrome Foundation Emerging Leadership Council and holds the position of advocacy chair.

Mayfield’s commitment to public health is shown through his role as project manager for the Care 4 Mississippi Medicaid Expansion coalition. He has also led the Advancing Health Equity in Chronic Kidney Disease project in collaboration with the Mississippi State Department of Health.
