Zarriah Smith, a senior agribusiness major at Alcorn State University, has been selected as a recipient of the 2025 Transportation, Elevator & Grain Merchants Association (TEGMA) Gold Scholar scholarship through Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS).

The Gloster, Miss. native was chosen from a group of applicants from across the country.

“The selection process was incredibly challenging due to the high caliber of applicants, but your application truly stood out, showcasing the significant impact you have already made in your academic journey,” said Erica Venancio, executive director of TEGMA.

Smith said the scholarship offers financial relief and professional opportunities as she prepares to enter the workforce.

“This scholarship will allow me to continue focusing on my education and professional development without the added stress of financial constraints. It’s an honor to receive this recognition from MANRRS, and I’m proud to represent Alcorn on a national stage.”

The award covered registration, lodging, and a $500 academic scholarship for Smith to attend the MANRRS 38th Annual Training Conference and Career Expo in Memphis, Tenn., from April 3-6, 2025.

Smith credited MANRRS with opening doors for her throughout her college career. She has secured internships and built valuable connections with industry professionals through the organization.

“MANRRS has provided opportunities that helped shape my career path,” she said. “Being recognized for this scholarship for the past four years is a testament to the impact this organization has had on my academic and professional growth.”

“Zarriah is a shining example of the talent we cultivate here at Alcorn,” said Dr. Shakebra L. Young, director of student services for the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. “She has consistently demonstrated professionalism, resilience, and a desire to give back to her community. We’re proud of her accomplishments and the way she represents both our college and the university.”

After graduation, Smith plans to pursue a career in agribusiness, focusing on human resources, aiming to help create opportunities for others in the agricultural industry.
