The Alcorn State University Department of Social Sciences hosted its annual Constitution and Citizenship Day event on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, in Dumas Hall to reflect on the American legacy of civic duty and the importance of informed participation.

Jarita Frazier King, executive director of the Alcorn State University Women’s Business Center, served as the keynote speaker, urging attendees to understand their civic responsibility and find their purpose.

This year’s event expanded on the meaning of the federal observance, which recognizes the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the U.S. Constitution, by focusing on civic engagement and the power of being an informed citizen in shaping local and national communities.

King’s message connected the historical importance of the founding documents to contemporary issues and the duty of citizens to preserve the nation’s democracy.

“Knowing your ‘why’ is the compass that keeps you grounded in your advocacy work—even when the path gets difficult,” King said. “We honor those who came before us by pushing forward, and the greatest tribute we can offer is to pay it forward for the next generation.”

The University is committed to civic education and the preservation of history, emphasizing the importance of connecting historical milestones to current societal topics. The event supports Alcorn’s mission to inspire its community to join a rich heritage of trailblazers and innovators ready to make a difference.
