Alcorn State University senior Allexus Smith, an accounting major from Magnolia, Miss., received the prestigious Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA) Scholarship on Oct. 20, 2025, for her commitment to academic excellence and the certified public accountant profession.

The MSCPA Scholarship, provided by the MSCPA Education Foundation, offers financial assistance to Mississippi students who demonstrate a strong dedication to pursuing a career as a CPA. The foundation’s awards recognize both undergraduate and graduate students who show academic distinction in accounting studies. Smith, who is preparing for the crucial CPA examination, shared her emotional reaction to the news.

“My initial reaction was an excited scream followed by an overwhelming sense of relief. It truly felt like everything was starting to fall into place,” Smith said. “I am deeply honored and sincerely grateful to be selected as a recipient of the MSCPA Scholarship. This recognition strengthens my commitment to academic excellence and professional development.”

Smith noted that the award will allow her to focus intensely on advancing her accounting studies without the financial strain of educational expenses, directly supporting her goal of becoming a licensed CPA. She also looks toward the future, aspiring to pursue graduate studies and use her knowledge to make meaningful contributions to the accounting profession and the business community.

Dr. Antwon D. Woods, Dean of the School of Business at Alcorn State University, praised Smith for her achievement.

“Allexus Smith exemplifies the qualities we foster in our students at Alcorn State. Her commitment to academic excellence and her passion for accounting merit this scholarship recognition,” Woods said. “We take satisfaction in her representation of our School of Business and university using the esteemed platform provided by the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants.”

Smith added that as a proud student of Alcorn State University, she is honored to uphold the institution’s core values of leadership, integrity, and service as she works toward her professional aspirations.
