Three Alcorn State University students attended the 2025 Agricultural Future of America (AFA) Leaders Conference in Kansas City, Mo., from Nov. 6-9.

The students gained professional development experience and exposure to careers across the agriculture industry.

Alcorn State participated through AFA’s University Growth Initiative.

The program partners with colleges and universities to expand access to leadership training and industry networks.

AFA sponsored three students to represent the university through the initiative.

Participants included Christopher McNair, a senior agribusiness management major of Fayette, Miss.; Zyon Polk, a sophomore agribusiness management major of Coffeeville, Miss; and Donovan Shoemaker, a sophomore agricultural science major of Walnut Grove, Miss.

The four-day conference brought together students to build leadership skills and connect with professionals.

Participants explored opportunities in environmental sustainability, global trade, agribusiness, and related fields.

“Coming from the rural South, a country boy, finding myself in Kansas City surrounded by some of the sharpest individuals and devoted agriculturalists was life-changing,” said McNair. “I found myself fully immersed in a constructive space of leaders discussing agricultural issues such as environmental sustainability, tariff impacts, and ag market demands.”

Polk said the experience helped broaden her perspective on the agriculture sector.

“It was truly an honor being able to represent my illustrious university at the 2025 AFA Leaders Conference,” said Polk. “I am thankful for the experience and all the meaningful connections that I’ve made.”

McNair, who graduates in December, received multiple job offers from the networking opportunities.

The experience lays the groundwork for expanding Alcorn State’s participation in future AFA programs.
