Alcorn State University’s radio station, WPRL 91.7 FM, is accepting donations for its 13th annual Christmas toy drive now through Thursday, Dec. 19. The drive aims to provide new, unwrapped gifts to children from newborns to age 13 in Claiborne and Jefferson counties.
The drive, a long-standing tradition for the station, invites Alcorn State students, staff, local vendors, and surrounding communities to donate.
This year, WPRL partnered with the Jefferson County Department of Human Services to ensure toys reach children most in need, while continuing its partnership with Claiborne County to register participating families.
Jerome Myles, production director for WPRL 91.7 FM, takes pride in keeping the tradition alive.
“Our main purpose for the toy drive is to make sure that as many children as possible in Jefferson and Claiborne counties can have at least one extra toy for Christmas,” said Myles. “We want this year to be bigger and better than the other years because of the things that are happening around us.”
Donations can be dropped off at the radio station, located in the Industrial Technology Building on Alcorn’s campus, or at Port Gibson City Hall in Port Gibson, Miss., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Charles Edmond, operations manager of WPRL 91.7 FM, emphasizes the community connection.
“Our goal is to help the community, and this is meant to bring us together as a family,” said Edmond. “WPRL is appreciative of Mr. Myles and our administrative assistant, Myrtle Hedrick, for helping organize this event and keeping the tradition alive.”
Through community collaboration and heartfelt generosity, WPRL 91.7 FM is committed to ensuring that no child is left without a gift this holiday season, embodying the university’s brand promise of being “Always Family.”
