The Alcorn State University Office of Religious and Spiritual Life will host the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March and Program on Tuesday, Jan. 20, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Oakland Memorial Chapel steps.
Lineup for the march will begin at 12:50 p.m.
The events will commence with a commemorative march led by the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), Student Government Association (SGA), and the Royal Court.
Participants will proceed from the chapel to the Campus Union Ballroom, where the formal program will take place.
The Rev. Shirley Harrington, minister of social justice at Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, Miss, will serve as the keynote speaker.
Harrington, a longtime activist and clergywoman, was ordained in 2011. She holds a master’s degree in human services from Lincoln University in Lincoln, Pa., and pursued divinity studies with the Atlanta ITC program in Washington, D.C.
“We are honored to welcome Rev. Harrington to campus to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy,” said Rev. Austin R. Warren, assistant director of religious and spiritual life. “Her work in social justice aligns with the spirit of this occasion, and we look forward to sharing this moment with the campus community.”
