Small farmers across Mississippi will gather next week to tackle the growing challenges facing rural agriculture, from climate change to evolving market demands.

Alcorn State University’s Extension Program will host its 34th Annual Small Farmers Conference Sept. 22-24 at the Harlow’s Casino Resort & Spa in Greenville, Miss. The three-day event, organized with the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives, expects to draw hundreds of farmers, ranchers and landowners.

“The primary goal is to provide educational resources that will assist farmers and landowners to make informed decisions and help them adapt within the ever-changing agricultural landscape, especially during this time of climate change,” said Gerald Jones, director for county operations at Alcorn State Extension Program.

Conference sessions will focus on practical solutions, with USDA program leaders and Mississippi agriculture officials discussing available assistance programs. Alcorn agriculture students will present research displays showcasing new farming techniques and technologies.

Dr. Alton Thompson, executive director of the Association of 1890 Research Directors, will deliver the keynote address on collaboration and research in building resilient rural communities.

The conference will honor two longtime Mississippi leaders. Retired Sen. David L. Jordan will receive the Spirit of Courage Award for his decades of service as an educator, Greenwood City Council member and Mississippi state senator. Alcorn alumnus and Central District Transportation Commissioner Willie Simmons will get the Community Impact Award for his leadership in advancing Mississippi’s infrastructure and supporting rural communities.

Small farms make up a significant portion of Mississippi’s agricultural sector, but many struggle with limited resources and changing climate conditions.

The conference provides networking opportunities and access to federal and state programs that many small operators might not otherwise know about.

“The Small Farmers Conference is where our mission comes to life,” said Dr. Franklin Chukwuma, associate director for extension at Alcorn State. “It’s about empowering farmers with the knowledge, networks and inspiration they need to succeed.”
