Alcorn’s Director of Inventory receives first Bill Pope Property Award

The Mississippi Association of Governmental Purchasing/Property Agents (MAGPPA) awarded Jerry Sims ’73, director of University Inventory at Alcorn, with the Bill Pope Property Award at its annual conference held in Biloxi, Mississippi, October 20-23, 2013.

This award is named after Bill Pope, retired chief of staff for the Office of the State Auditor, who was instrumental in organizing the Magnolia Chapter of MAGPPA in Mississippi and getting property managers in the state certified. Pope personally presented the award to Sims and said, “I am elated to honor Mr. Sims with this award as he has made significant contributions to property management on the state and national levels. He was one of the founders of the Magnolia Chapter of MAGPPA back in 1999. Congratulations, Mr. Sims!”

“Alcorn State University is the first state agency in Mississippi to receive this newly instituted award,” shared Sims proudly. “This award brings recognition to the University’s accomplishments as we have set the standards for property accountability and understand the importance of being good stewards of our property. I thank the Alcorn faculty, staff and administrators for their support and cooperation.”

“We are delighted for Mr. Sims to have received this prestigious award,” stated Dr. Betty J. Roberts, senior vice president for University Operations/Chief Operating Officer at Alcorn. “His work performance is outstanding. Mr. Sims is highly organized and consistently demonstrates integrity in his work. He has established great working relationships with departments to ensure the accuracy of inventories. We are proud of him.”

Mr. Sims now holds a complete set of awards offered by MAGPPA to its members in the area of property management. His latest achievements include receiving the 2013 Property Manager of the Year Award, serving as delegate from the state of Mississippi on the national conference of the National Property Management Association (NPMA) in 2012, and presenting at a MAGPPA conference in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 2010. He also received the Property Officer of the Year Award in 2003 and has the recognition as one of the first property officers to become certified in the state of Mississippi.
