Alcorn student learns business foundations, turns dream into reality
Do you dream about starting your own business? Come study business at Alcorn and you will learn how to turn your dream into reality. Timothy Washington, a sophomore majoring in business administration did just that. He took a class on small business development last spring and soon after, he and his wife opened a new business. Their company T&K Ice Cream and Snacks, LLC out of Vicksburg, Mississippi, has recently signed a contract with Sodexo and has been offering its products, Blue Bell ice cream and snacks, at Alcorn’s home football games and other events on campus. Washington has also developed relationships with local schools, churches and communities surrounding Vicksburg.
“I have learned so much from the class and from my instructor Mr. Willie Anderson,” says Washington. “I have always wanted to become a business owner, but did not know how. From the class, I learned the proper way of starting a small business including selecting a legal name for it, obtaining all the necessary tax and employer IDs and much more.” He added, “What also tremendously helped me was completing a business plan as one of the requirements of the class. It showed me the importance of research, effective communication and planning for achieving success in business. I would encourage all students interested in becoming a business owner to enroll in this course and use the information for their benefit.”
Mr. Anderson, a faculty in the School of Business, had only positive things to share about his student and now business owner Timothy Washington, “He was very excited about attending class each day and asked many questions about starting and running a business. Hopefully, Timothy’s example will serve as a catalyst for many students with great ideas and dreams of becoming business owners. All we have to do as business instructors is give them a little assistance.” Anderson, who also owns a consulting business and has over 10 years of experience in working on consulting projects, added, “My office is open to any student or community member and I am happy to assist with developing a business plan, registering a business, working on contracts or any issues with a business. Our goal in the School of Business is to assist our students to achieve their goals in life and become successful.”
