Alcorn State University Scholarship Gala exceeds expectations

The opportunities for Alcorn State University students continue to expand thanks to donations from Alcorn's faculty, staff and alumni.

The Presidential Scholarship Gala was held Thursday, April 16 at the Vicksburg Convention Center in Vicksburg, Miss. The purpose of the scholarship gala was to raise funds that would create more financial opportunities that would enable Alcorn students to have a successful college career. The event was held in conjunction with the inauguration of Alcorn State University’s 19th President, Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr.

The scholarship gala committee and the Alcorn State University Foundation, Inc. collected an overflowing amount of funds in sponsorship support. Vice President of Institutional Advancement Marcus Ward applauded his fellow Alcornites for their generous donations.

“Many of you have reached deep into your pockets to support Alcorn, and for that, we are grateful,” said Ward. “It is your kindness that has helped make tonight and all of the inaugural events enjoyable and memorable.”

George Flaggs Jr., who is the Mayor for the City of Vicksburg, gave the keynote address for the scholarship gala. He expressed his passion for Vicksburg as well as forming an even stronger bond with Alcorn State University.

“I am so passionate about Vicksburg,” said Flaggs. “Vicksburg is proud to have a strong relationship with Alcorn State University. I look forward to strengthening that relationship for years to come.”

Flaggs gave kudos to Alcorn’s alumni for their dedication to uplifting the University and enthusiastic efforts to push Alcorn in a positive direction.

“Alcorn State University has the strongest alumni association that I have ever been associated with. You represent Alcorn in numbers with understanding of Alcorn’s tradition and legacy of greatness. I encourage you to continue to stay strong in making the progress of Alcorn a priority.”

Mississippi State Senator Albert Butler touched on the inaugural theme, “We Are Alcorn. Tradition. Excellence. Legacy.” He acknowledged that President Rankins is the perfect individual to set on Alcorn’s throne.

“Dr. Rankins is a product of Alcorn who was chosen to lead. He knows the history of this great institution and personifies greatness. He is willing to pass down the elements of Alcorn’s culture to generations to come. His excellence demonstrates how he’s willing to be innovative and excel at his job.”

Alcorn President Dr. Alfred Rankins closed the gala by staying persistent in advocating for the assistance of Alcorn’s students.

“It warms my heart to see so many of my friends and loved ones supporting the deserving students of Alcorn State University,” said Rankins. “My message has always been to give back to Alcorn to help our students.”
