SWAC Champion Lady Braves Tennis Team to face Auburn University in NCAA Tournament

The Alcorn State University Lady Braves Tennis Team hopes to ride the momentum of winning the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship into the NCAA Tournament.

The team will travel to Alabama Friday, May 13 to face the Auburn University Tigers at 2 p.m. at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Auburn’s campus. The Lady Braves are the fourth ranked team in the Auburn Regional. Auburn is the number one ranked team in regional tournament. With the upcoming competition, the Lady Braves will make their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

Alcorn tennis coach Anthony Dodgen is excited to return to the tournament and looks forward to the competition.

“We are excited to be in the NCAA Tournament again this year,” said Dodgen. “Auburn is an elite team, so we know how difficult the competition will be. We intend to give it our best effort and we hope that the outcome comes out in our favor.”

Despite Auburn’s track record of stellar play and high tournament ranking, Dodgen is confident that his team can hold their own against any competition.

“We’re definitely not intimidated by competing against ranked teams because we have done it multiple times during our regular season.”

The first and second rounds will be played May 13 and 14 and will include a single elimination format. The winner will advance to the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma where the remaining 16 teams will compete for the NCAA National Championship Thursday, May 19 through Tuesday, May 24.
