Alcorn State University’s NEO Brave Reproductive Health Grant has been a big help to the University in its first year of existence.
Alcorn received the $254,000 grant from NEO Philanthropy, Inc. back in August 2015. It’s played a significant role in the Alcorn School of Nursing’s Brave Reproductive Health Project, which provides age appropriate gynecological exams and contraception to women in need via a mobile outreach unit. The grant has also enabled the Alcorn State University Family Clinic in Natchez, Mississippi to offer free women’s health services in Adams, Claiborne, Jefferson, Warren and Wilkinson counties.
Srabani Mohanty, office manager for the Alcorn State University Family Clinic, said that over 200 young women received free services in the grant’s first year. She is pleased with role the grant has played in the clinics efforts to serve the community.
“The grant has been extremely successful in helping young women overcome their financial and access barriers to obtain quality reproductive healthcare at no cost,” said Mohanty. “The clinic looks forward to serving the community and offering more women access to free, quality healthcare.”
After speaking with several patients who benefited from the clinic’s free services, Mohanty said that they were more than satisfied with the quality of their visits.
“Our patients are often happy with the resources that we provide. One patient said she received consultation on family planning and was prescribed birth control. She also said that the services were very beneficial considering students like her don’t have health insurance. Another patient described our services as ‘clean, friendly, professional and beneficial.’ She said she was very grateful.”
