Shalonda Brinkley earns master’s degree from the University of Southern Mississippi

With hard work and determination, Alcorn State University alumna Shalonda Brinkley successfully furthered her education.

On Friday, Dec. 16, her hard work paid off when she earned a master’s degree in child and family studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. She earned a bachelor’s degree in the same field from Alcorn in 2014.

Brinkley has always been fascinated with how children are affected by the actions of their families.

“I was prompted to study child and family studies because I was curious about how children are impacted by their families from infancy to adulthood, and how families impact children without realizing the influence they have on them,” said Brinkley. “I have a passion for young children and their early development.”

An ever-changing field is what motivated Brinkley to pursue her master’s degree. She said that furthering her education was the key to learning new skills.

“I realized that child development is an area of growth, and the only way to remain up to par with the latest trends and information was to take my education to the next level. Earning a master’s degree will help in my career because of my more in-depth knowledge and understanding of child development.”

Brinkley said that earning a master’s degree gave her a sense of accomplishment and was a rewarding experience.
