Alcorn to celebrate 25th anniversary opening of Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, Dwight Fisher Field

The 2017 football season at Alcorn State University will mark the 25th year that the Braves football team has called Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, Dwight Fisher Field their home, and the university has big plans to celebrate the special occasion.

Originally named Jack Spinks Stadium and dedicated on Sept. 19, 1992, with a 32-7 victory over Alabama State, the stadium was renamed on Sept. 17, 2011 to recognize the contributions of Casem. To kick off the milestone celebration, the university will pay tribute and make a very special pre-game presentation to Casem Saturday, Sept. 23 when the Braves take on Southern.

President Alfred Rankins, Jr. is looking forward to welcoming alumni and fans for the festivities and celebrating the historic silver anniversary.

“Spinks-Casem Stadium has been home to so many memorable moments in Alcorn football history,” said Rankins. “I think all Braves fans – those who have been here for many of the past 25 years and our more recent followers – will appreciate this anniversary celebration. Recognizing the contributions of Coach Casem is just the first step in what will be an outstanding commemorative season.”

Alcorn is also unveiling the official Spinks-Casem Stadium 25th Anniversary commemorative logo as a part of the celebration of the wins, teams, players and events that have made the stadium a landmark.

The purple, shield-style logo conveys the iconic look of the west (home) grandstand and east (visitor) stands along with a silhouette of the new video scoreboard at the top and the number “25” featured prominently in the center and incorporates the Alcorn athletics logo at the bottom between the years “1992” and “2017”.

The university has a number of activities, promotions and giveaways scheduled during and between each home game for the remainder of the season.

Saturday will feature commemorative posters and a three-dimensional replica stadium birthday cake. Keepsake replica stadiums, t-shirts and a special presentation and tribute to Spinks will take place at Homecoming.

As a reminder to fans, berm hill areas around the field will feature the logo painted on grass and between the 20 and 30 yard marks on the field as a subtle touch for a simple stadium with so much history.

Fans are encouraged to get involved and share their favorite Spinks-Casem Stadium memories via Alcorn’s official social media platforms using the hashtag #SpinksCasem25th.
