Students Explore Internships in Professional Development Mixer
Alcorn Students had the opportunity to enjoy a night of conversation in a relaxed atmosphere on Thursday, Oct. 19, during a professional development student mixer. Held in the Ray Johnson Assembly Center, this event was designed to engage students in their field of study, allowing them to network with peers, faculty and staff and to be encouraged to learn more through internships.
Michael Trusclair, USDA 1890 program liaison presided, welcoming the guests in attendance. He expressed that the key to finding career opportunities is through networking.
“It’s important for students to understand that great communication skills and professional development are important to entering the workforce,” he said. “It’s important to change their mindset and reverse any negative habits before they enter a career.”
Dr. Edmund Buckner, Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs, spoke to students about the importance of internships, mock-interviews, and well-constructed resumes.
“Take advantage of all that we have here at Alcorn and treat your education as the first step to your career,” he said. “The way to job opportunities is through the internship door.”
Student panelists Brandon Fisher, Marissa Allen, Diana Young and Alexis Parker each gave presentations about their internships conducted over the past summer, as well as the lessons and experiences that came along with those opportunities. They encouraged students to study hard and to gain knowledge both in and out of the classroom. They also stressed the importance of networking with peers and professionals, as well as the ability to adapt to new environments.
“During an internship, you learn lessons that prepare you for life after college,” Young said. “Internships help to get your foot in the door.”
Following the presentations, the students asked questions and the student panelists provided them with feedback. Trusclair gave closing remarks and extended invitations for the next student mixer.
