Alcorn’s Mortar Board chapter delegates gain quality leadership experience at the 2019 National Conference
A student and an instructor from Alcorn State University recently participated in a national conference geared toward enhancing their leadership abilities.
Erica Nelson and Monica Burr attended the 2019 Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society National Conference Aug. 2-4 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Burr, an instructor in the Department of Biological Sciences, participated in the Leadership Excellence and Advisor Development (LEAD) portion of the conference.
Nelson, a senior radiation technology major, said that she was the only student represent Alcorn and HBCUs at the conference. Her experience went well, and she feels that she was a good representation of her alma mater.
“It was an amazing experience,” said Nelson. “I feel that I represented my Alcorn family well.”
Being that Nelson serves as Alcorn’s Mortar Board Honor Society, she talked about her plans for Mortar Board and other organizations that she holds membership. Her focuses are being a role model and advising the younger Alcornites.
“I not only learned how to be a better leader all around but to be a better leader with the little things also and how everyone’s feelings matter.”
Burr discussed how the LEAD training provided her with the tools and resources to better serve students. The LEAD training also increased Burr’s awareness of the importance of being an active advisor.
“The training session was exciting, and I look forward to utilizing my newly acquired knowledge and skills here at Alcorn,” said Burr.
