Alcorn’s Agriculture and Applied Sciences Dean Reappointed to NAREEE Advisory Board
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the reappointment of Dr. Edmund R. Buckner, dean of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and director of Land-grant Programs, to the National Agricultural Research, Extension, Education, and Economics (NAREEE) Advisory Board. Buckner represents the National Farm or Producer Organization category.
“It is an honor and privilege to serve on the NAREEE Board, which advises the Secretary of Agriculture and land-grant colleges and universities on the top priorities and policies for food and agricultural research, education, Extension, and economics,” said Dr. Buckner. “This opportunity is vital for Alcorn State University because it gives us a chance to highlight the priorities and needs of our state’s farmers, ranchers, and land-grant universities while recognizing the valuable contributions that Alcorn State University makes to agriculture and related sciences.”
According to a press release, the NAREEE Advisory Board provides feedback to the Secretary of Agriculture, USDA’s Research, Education, and Economics (REE) mission area, and land-grant colleges and universities on food and agricultural research education, extension and economics priorities and policies. The Advisory Board also provides reports and recommendations to the appropriate agricultural committees of the U.S. Congress.
The Secretary of Agriculture selects and appoints NAREEE board members. As defined by the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, each board member is a representative for specific categories related to farming or ranching, food production and processing, forestry research, crop and animal science, Land-grant Institutions, Non-Land-grant colleges or universities with a historical commitment to research in food and agricultural sciences, food retailing and marketing, rural economic development, and natural resources and consumer interest groups. Members of the committees serve 1 – 3 years.
