Alcorn State University has experienced an increase in its enrollment numbers, welcoming over 100 new students for the 2024-2025 academic year. The total unduplicated enrollment has risen to 2,995 students, marking a 3.5% increase from the previous year’s 2,894 students.
This year, 720 new students, including 579 first-year students and 141 transfer students, selected Alcorn State as their preferred academic destination.
“Alcorn State University’s enrollment growth shows an enhanced focus on providing a quality education in a supportive learning environment for our students,” said Dr. Tracy M. Cook, president of Alcorn State. “I would like to thank our Admissions and Recruiting Team and support staff for their hard work to recruit quality students who recognize the value of an Alcorn education.”
He continued, “A special thanks to our alumni and students for their invaluable support of our recruitment initiatives. Our enrollment growth highlights the collaborative efforts of our entire community—faculty, staff, students, and alumni working together.”
Alcorn State continues to demonstrate its strength as a leader in STEM education, with more than half of its student body pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
“We are excited about the enrollment growth that the University has experienced this term,” said Dr. Edward Rice, vice president of student affairs. “This increase reflects Alcorn State University’s commitment to serving a diverse population and fostering an environment where every student can prosper and be successful.”
The University’s diverse student community represents 36 states and 13 countries. In addition, 34% of students are first-generation college students.
Alcorn maintains a 16:1 student-to-faculty ratio that ensures individualized attention and mentorship for students.
The University has also expanded its dual enrollment program, now serving 169 high school students and providing early access to college-level education. This increase shows a 19.68% growth from last year’s number of 141 dual enrollment students.
“Alcorn is excited to have an increase in enrollment for Fall 2024, signifying our commitment to providing a high-quality education and fostering a supportive and well-rounded learning environment,” said De’Martinez Simmons, interim director of admissions and recruiting. “This growth highlights the trust and commitment our community has in us and enhances our ability to offer diverse programs and resources for all students.”
Students pursuing biology currently represent the largest academic program at Alcorn State, followed by business administration, general studies, agricultural science, and psychology.
The University’s geographic reach extends across the nation, with student populations from Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Illinois, Arkansas, and Wisconsin. The largest international student groups coming from Australia, Botswana, Cameroon, Canada, and Colombia.
