Medgar Evers Statue on the campus of Alcorn State University

We honor the life and legacy of Alcorn State University alumnus Medgar Evers, whose 100th birthday is today.

Mr. Evers graduated from Alcorn A&M College, now known as Alcorn State University, in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. As a student, he was a member of the choir, debate team, and track and football teams. Additionally, Mr. Evers was the junior class president. He graduated from the University in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

After returning from World War II, Mr. Evers and his friends tried to vote but were turned away at gunpoint. This event launched his work in civil rights to seek fairness and equality.

As the state’s first NAACP field secretary, he worked to improve equal access to public facilities, school desegregation, and voting rights. Unfortunately, Mr. Evers’ life was taken away in pursuit of the many privileges we are afforded today.

His life was a testament to selfless service and sacrifice. His pursuit of justice and equality has made our world a better place. Most recently, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian honor awarded to individuals.

As we honor him today, let’s continue to uplift the underserved and create positive change.

Always Alcorn,

Dr. Tracy M. Cook, 21st President
