Two new Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistants (FLTA) have arrived at Alcorn State University to teach Portuguese and Mandarin Chinese for the upcoming academic year. Filipe Pereira Machado from Brazil will teach Portuguese, and Ju-Ting Hsiao from Taiwan will teach Mandarin Chinese through the Office of Global Programs, providing students with unique cultural and academic opportunities.
The FFLTA Program, a component of the prestigious Fulbright Program, allows Alcorn State to expand its offerings of Less Commonly Taught Languages (LCTLs). The Office of Global Programs has actively participated in this initiative for over a decade, hosting FLTAs from various countries to provide instruction in languages such as Arabic, Russian, and Japanese.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Machado and Ms. Hsiao to Alcorn State University,” said Dr. Byron Johnson, professor and director of Global Programs. “Their presence enriches our curriculum and provides our students with invaluable opportunities to learn new languages and engage with diverse cultures. The Fulbright program is a cornerstone of our commitment to global education.”
The Fulbright Program, established in 1946 by Sen. J. William Fulbright, is the U.S. government’s flagship educational and cultural exchange program. Its primary goal is to foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. Since its inception, the program has awarded over 370,000 grants worldwide.
Students interested in enrolling in the courses can register for GP 101-001 (Portuguese) or GP 101-003 (Chinese). Both courses are available for academic credit through the Office of Global Programs.
